Savinelli is an Italian pipe company with a long interest in the cigar business. The company has several varieties, the oldest and most famous being the Savinelli Extremely Limited Reserve, made by Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia.
A new blend is the cornerstone of the recently-released Savinelli Special Selection 2005 Series made by the Oliva family in Estelí, Nicaragua. This medium- to full-bodied line consists of 100 percent all-Nicaraguan Cuban-seed tobaccos and an Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. The Savinelli Special Selection 2005 Torpedo, which is made for Savinelli by the Oliva Cigar Co. in Nicaragua, is superb. Oliva has incredible stocks of well-aged tobacco, and it shows in this torpedo. It’s rich in appearance, with a leathery and woody start that morphs into caramel and coffee flavors. The finish is long and spicy, with a cherry note. The Savinelli Special Selection 2005 Torpedo is made with tobacco harvested in 2005 and offered a wide range of complex flavors, earning it a score of 92 points by Cigar Aficionado. It is a torpedo with a deep brown wrapper. The first puffs are leathery and woody before some caramel and coffee flavors settle in. The long, spicy finish has a cherry note.
Three shapes are available: toro (6 x 52), $6.75 suggested retail; robusto (5 1/2 x 50), $6.50 retail; and torpedo (6 1/2 x 54), $7.00 retail. The cigars are aged four months, and are presented in 20-count cedar boxes. MADE BY: Oliva Cigar Co. |
