NUb Cigars – Small in Size But Packed With Flavor

by Johnny Mixx on March 16, 2009

Just the sweet spot — that is the theory behind the NUb, a new line of short, ultra-thick cigars made by Oliva Cigar Co. The concept for the NUb is based on the idea that the average cigar usually finds its sweet spot — the part of the cigar that is most flavorful and balanced — at the 3 1/2 inch- to 4-inch point of a cigar.

Starting with a fine Nicaraguan filler and binder, NUb creator Sam Leccia increased the ring gauge while decreasing the length of a typical cigar. The “Nub” delivers almost instantaneous flavor upon ignition, yet smokes for a similar duration as other cigars that, at least visually, appear almost double the size.

No NUb is longer than 4 inches long. Oliva says NUb cigars are loaded with copious amounts of tobacco; some of the cigars are as thick as 66 ring gauge, or more than one inch in diameter. The large ring gauge not only produces abundant amounts of smoke, but consequently forms a dense ash which, Oliva says, insulates the cigar as it burns, keeping it cool and maintaining its flavors.

The NUb Connecticut cigar, for instance, is traditionally a very mild smoke, but the stature and ring gauge of a NUb fills out the flavor, producing a far more creamy Connecticut than the usual fare. The NUb Cameroon’s nutty aroma, mixed with notes of coffee and cedar, produces a clear, well balanced smoke. The NUb Habano wrapper is known for it’s bold, complexity. The large ring gauge NUb softens the powerful spice, producing a unique and delicious version of this famous wrapper leaf.

NUb cigars are excellently made. They are firm, well constructed cigars with a nice oily looking wrapper. Even burn, great construction, and wonderful draw. The enormous ring size helps to keep the temperature down but more notably, the flavor of the tobacco was mouth watering. This cigar is a must try, and may become your new favorite.

I really like the concept of the Nub and of course, the cigar itself. And other companies have begun with their own versions.

I think they need to come out with a carry case for Nubs. That would be a neat little marketing gimmick.
