Saint Luis Rey is a great value, featuring a medium to full bodied blend at an everyday low price. It is well balanced with a rich earthy aroma.
Originally introduced at Le Cigar Noir-Beverly Hills on May 1, 1996, this Honduran version of an old Cuban brand was an immediate hit with everyone who tried it. Full-bodied but smooth on the draw, these cigars blended plenty of flavor with a slow-burning cadre of Honduran-grown, Cuban-seed tobaccos for a relaxing smoke. These smokes quickly became worldwide favorites.
Hand made in Honduras, Saint Luis Rey is now distributed at the national level. Beautifully packaged in attractive semi-boite nature boxes, Saint Luis Rey cigars achieve their renowned full flavor and aroma through a unique blend of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Peruvian tobaccos, a Nicaraguan binder and a dark, rich Nicaraguan wrapper. These coveted cigars are moderately priced and available in several sizes.

Most people will fall in love with this cigar as I did if you appreciate the fuller-bodied cigars. A friend of mine referred this cigar to me and I’m glad he did as it has been a staple in my collection ever since. Bang-for-the-buck, this cigar is one of the top-valued cigars available. A great tasting cigar that leaves you wanting for more.
Appearance :

The dark, leathery Nicaraguan wrapper catches my eye. Relatively smooth, there are some large veins running down the side. She’s a nice looking stick. The cap is clipped and I start puffing. Almost instantly, I notice a woody characteristic that dominates.
Construction :

The draw on the Churchill was flawless as this size tends to be the most flavorful vitola with many blends. As the cigar burns, the natural oils of the tobaccos heat up and mingle. The longer the burn, the longer these tasty oils can mingle, often leading towards a more complex cigar.
Flavor :

The flavor is relatively dry, and medium-bodied in strength from the get-go. The smoke is long and lush with pepper and spice. The end of the cigar is rich, with a light, lingering sweetness. Still, a woody flavor takes priority right down to the nub.
Value :

Definitely worth while, particularly at such an affordable price!
Overall Rating :

This is a pleasant cigar with a robust mix of flavors that most will enjoy. Not overly complex, but not one-dimensional either. At $3 a pop if purchased by the box, this is a great valued cigar. One that you won’t mind passing around to friends as it won’t break the bank. Overall, an excellent smoke indeed.

Looking for a value-priced premium cigar that doesn’t shame itself when held up against sticks costing twice the price? Well, if you don’t already have a Saint Luis Rey Reserva Especial, or two, in your humidor you may want to fix that. Why? First off, you could spend alot more and get a less quality smoke. Second, it’s a smooth blend that has a true medium body yet is quite smooth and well-rounded. Finally, it burns true and for a period well over an hour and thus what is already a value stick becomes even more compelling.
Now, you, and I, can’t have the complexity of a Padron 1964 at this price and if it has some shortcomings it would have to be in that department. There is little change in the flavor profile as the Saint Luis Rey RE burns and not a much in the way of spiciness that many times, when done well as the Padrons have perfected to a high art, seals the deal and raises a cigar to rare air territory. I actually think that is impossible at this price point and I accept that, you should too because with these caveats mentioned you still get a premium smoke at a knock-out value price. For me, and perhaps you too, this makes this stick a welcome addition to my rotation. Pick up one of these today and see if you don’t agree.
