Cohiba Red Dot Churchill Cigar Review – Cohiba Cigars

by Johnny Mixx on June 23, 2009

Cohiba Red DotAs one of the best selling and most famous brands in the world, the Cohiba is a super premium blend with an esteemed reputation for quality and flavor. Cohiba is the best-known name in cigars. Today Cohiba stands for quality and the finest tobaccos Cuba has to offer.

The Cohiba cigar that is crafted today in the Dominican Republic took more than six years to develop. The dark, rich wrapper leaf is grown in the sub-tropical West African climate of Cameroon. The supple and flavorful Jember binder is grown in Indonesia. To balance the richness of the wrapper, the smooth-smoking Piloto Cubano filler leaves are grown in the Dominican Republic.

The Cohiba Red Dot is the legal, Dominican version of Cohiba, and the only one made for the US that can legally bear the trademark. Like its Cuban counterpart, the Cohiba Red Dot uses only the finest tobaccos and the most qualified rollers in constructing this legendary cigar. It is finished with a West African, Cameroon wrapper that gives this cigar a sweet and rich aroma that is medium to full-bodied. The Cohiba Red Dot cigars are not made with Cuban-grown tobaccos.

Cohiba "Red Dot" cigars are made in the Dominican Republic by the General Cigar Company. The cigars have a unique band with a couple of obvious red dots, one inside the black letter ‘O’ in the name Cohiba, and another inside a black circle on the side of the band. This unique band with red dots helps distinguish the cigars from their Cuban counterparts.

Appearance : ★★★½☆
The length of this size if 7 inches and the ring is 49. The filler of this stick is made with Dominican tobaccos, the wrapper is an African Cameroon, and the binder is made from a rare Indonesian leaf. The cigar looks well kept. The wrapper seems to be in good condition and while the stick isn’t as pliable as I usually shoot for, it seems good enough to give a try.

Construction : ★★★½☆
The cigar was very well made, had an excellent draw, and did not require any relights. The cigar burned evenly and held a long ash. There were not any issues with the construction of the cigar to negatively impact my smoking experience. The draw is smooth and the finish is outstanding.

Flavor : ★★★½☆
The flavorful Cohiba Red Dot Dominican cigars are an extremely well balanced cigar, very similar to the Cuban Cohiba. Cohiba Red Dot cigars offer you flavor with top of the line construction. This cigar has a solid core of distinctly nutty flavors that have an underlying creaminess. French peanut notes and a touch of caramel on the finish make this a very tasty medium bodied smoke. You’ll find them to have a smooth draw – good from start to finish!

Value : ★★★☆☆
This cigar is priced around $12.00 per stick as a single purchase, which I find to be overpriced. Are we paying for the brand name or the cigar. These cigars would only be worth the price to veteran cigar enthusiasts who really enjoy full bodied cigars with very deep tobacco flavors.

Overall Rating : ★★★☆☆
In my opinion I have found many cigars that have a far more reasonable price and are much better to my taste. I just think its a bit overrated. Factoring in the cost, I’m not exactly ready to label this a premium smoke but overall it’s a decent cigar. In fact, the cost ends up being what brings my rating down.
