Nub Habano 460 Cigar Review

Nub Habano 460 Cigar Review – Nub Cigars

by Johnny Mixx on July 17, 2009

Nub HabanoConsidered one of the most innovative cigar concepts, Nub Cigars is a line of short, stout and well-filled smokes blended to capture the perfect essence of a cigar. These cigars are completely made by hand with densely packed long filler, allowing each stick to burn slowly while maintaining a smoking time comparable to conventional sizes ranging from robusto to presidente.

Massive smoke in a small package! “Nub –The cigar that makes a complete ASH of itself” Rated a “2008 Best Buy” by Cigar Insider, Nub Cigars by Oliva is a stunning innovation that delivers only the most enjoyable part of the cigar, that tasty “sweet spot” occurring in the last 3-1/2″ to 4″ of a full sized stogie… But don’t think of the Nub as a short smoke… oh no, no. Depending upon the size you order, the Nub will smoke for as long as a standard sized Toro or Churchill but, by design, it comes out swinging with its full, savory flavor from the very first puff!

With Oliva’s flawless reputation, they were an easy choice as a partner for Nub Cigars creator Sam Leccia. Sam, a long time cigar enthusiast, has been fascinated with a cigar’s natural tendency to fully develop in strength and flavor about 1/3 of the way into the cigar. He referred to this portion of a cigar as its “sweet spot”, and noted that it was typically temporary and short lived.

Convinced he could capture this “sweet spot” in a compact smoke that would maintain perfect flavor from start to finish, he enlisted the help of the Oliva Family to work on Nub Cigar prototypes. In short time, the Family realized that Sam made an incredible discovery, and by combining the perfect size and shape with certain blends, they were able to deliver only the best part of a cigar, its essence.

A cigar is judged by the enjoyment it provides. That enjoyment is defined by the quality of the ingredients, the craftsmanship in construction, and the form that blends those together. The NUb cigar is a study in cigar smoking enjoyment – increasing the ring gauge while decreasing the length of a typical cigar. Pick one up, immerse yourself in the thick rich smoke, and see what makes Nub cigars stand apart.

Appearance : ★★★★☆
The Nub Habano has a smooth, oily wrapper the color of milk chocolate. Very nice looking stick with no veins. The one thing I don’t like is when you can’t fit a cigar in a cutter because it is too big. Pre-light aroma – got lots of spice, with some leathery notes to it

Construction : ★★★★★
The beefy ring gauge is a bit awkward but the draw was excellent. This cigar really did start off great from the get go. Very easy draw, a little too easy. On the draw, I got mostly that familiar spice flavor, and it was predominant through the draw.

Flavor : ★★★★☆
It had a strong woody core accompanied by nuts and rich creaminess. The flavors were very good and consistent throughout. It lacks complexity but the flavors are excellent making it a very enjoyable smoke. Predominantly woody flavor throughout the smoke. Also leather in the first two thirds, a touch of spice and nutty overtones. In the last third the burn got a little hot, which probably was the reason of somewhat reduced intensity of flavors.

Burn : ★★★★☆
The burn was quite good, some unevenness was there throughout the smoke, but was easily fixed with a quick touch-up from lighter. Very good draw, requires no effort to deliver large volumes of creamy smoke. Excellent firm light-grey whitish ash with no flakes, 2" and could stay longer. Had the cigar resting on the table, ON the ash, with the butt of the cigar up in the air. That should tell you just how well constructed this cigar is.

Overall Rating : ★★★★☆
While the cigar is more of a novelty, it was a nice smoke. There were a few burn issues and the big ring gauge takes a little getting used to. Even though I took my time with it, total smoke time was a solid hour. The burn became a little too hot in the final third of the smoke. Overall I was impressed with this cigar. The flavors were really great and I enjoyed it a lot, but the heat issue makes me hesitant to smoke these very often.
