Padilla Obsidian Edicion Especial 2006 Belicoso Cigar Review

Padilla Obsidian Edicion Especial 2006 BelicosoIf searching for a medium to full-bodied cigar that is incredibly rich and so well-made it rivals Ernesto Padilla’s famed Miami blend, then the Padilla Obsidian Belicoso should be the cigar of choice.

Padilla has become a household name associated with the most elite aficionados. Each cigar is hand crafted under the supervision of Ernesto Padilla and each stick is made to Ernesto’s exacting standards. Padilla cigars have earned many high ratings from numerous publications, including a 92 rating by Cigar Aficionado for the highly sought after Padilla Miami.

Manufactured in Honduras, the Padilla Obsidian is only created in limited quantities, making it a rare treat. The blend is medium to full in body, offering many competing nuances of spice and pepper, cleverly masked by full-flavored, rich nuances of espresso and cocoa. These flavors come from the cigar’s beautiful, oily, jet-black maduro wrapper.

This Nicaraguan ligero leaf conceals a robust mixture of Honduran Corojo and Nicaraguan tobaccos that produce ample spice, but taste incredibly smooth and mellow due to its excellent wrapper. Smooth and complex with a slightly sweet finish, the Padilla Obsidian rivals the famous Padilla Miami, which makes it a perfect addition for any humidor.

The dark, maduro wrapper was a bit veiny but smooth to the touch. Capped the cigar with a guillotine cutter and was ready for lighting. The first puff released the heat from it’s maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan filler. It hit me as a medium-full bodied tasting cigar. Very nice taste, but could be overpowering to some. The first third of the cigar had an excellent draw and even burn.

There was a flavor change in the second third of the stick as it mellowed in taste somewhat. I would say that it became a medium-bodied cigar after the first third. The burn became a little uneven and required a retouch. The Padilla Obsidian is a slow burning cigar as it took 1 hr and 20 min to finish. I wonder if this facilitated in the
unevenness of the burn.

The final third of the cigar was no different – medium-bodied in strength, nice draw. But, it required another re-lighting. Overall, the Padilla Obsidian Belicoso was an enjoyable cigar but the constant need to retouch the lighting detracted from it’s enjoyment to a degree. I would smoke this cigar again.
