Hoyo de Monterrey is one of the most recognized names in cigars. With deep roots in Cuba, this brand has consistently been one of the best cigars to ever come off the island. In 1969, after the trade embargo, production moved to Honduras and was first harvested from a Cuban seed smuggled out of Cuba in a diplomatic pouch.

The unique multi country blend used to make Hoyo de Monterrey is medium bodied with a solid creamy flavor and great balance. The cigar is currently made under the supervision of Estello Padron at the Villizon Factory where other big names such as Punch are made today. Estello’s commitment to quality and perfection ensures that each Hoyo de Monterrey is worthy of the name. Hoyo de Monterrey is and always has been a classic. Smoked by new enthusiasts and aficionados alike, it has a versatile flavor that appeals to many palates.

The Dark Sumatra is one of the fullest flavored Hoyo de Monterrey blends, featuring an extra fermented dark wrapper.

It takes a great cigar master to spot the potential of a new tobacco–and an even greater one to turn it into an outstanding cigar. So it was with Estelo Padrón when he discovered an unusually dark Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper curing in his barn. One look at its deep color inspired him to create this singularly rich, robust Hoyo de Monterrey cigar that is as deeply satisfying as it is authentically Honduran.

A line extension from Hoyo de Monterrey, this extra-rich cigar called “Dark Sumatra”, is named after its wrapper tobaccos, which are hand-selected from the very darkest and richest Ecuadorian sun-grown, Sumatra seed leaves. These choice, extra-dark Sumatra leaves are then aged in “tercios”, wood-textured bales made of thick, dried palm leaves. This special selection and aging process guarantees that the Dark Sumatra is one of the best-tasting cigars ever to come out of Honduras. Dark Sumatra also has a rich textured Connecticut Broadleaf binder and a special robust blend of premium Honduran and Dominican filler tobaccos that all contribute to the extraordinary taste.

Rolled in the rich tradition that is Hoyo de Monterrey, Hoyo de Tradicion captures many of the flavors that first made this time honored brand famous back in 1865.

Having immigrated to Cuba at the age of 13, José Gener was surrounded by tobacco his entire life. In 1860 José purchased the Hoyo de Monterrey farm where he turned the golden leaves from the legendary Cuban soil into a brand by the same name. By 1895 the Hoyo de Monterrey factory became the largest factory in Cuba, and today the brand is highly regarded as one of the world”s finest with production in both Cuba and Honduras.

The Hoyo de Tradicion is an exceptional value. Starting with a reddish brown, Cuban seed Jamastran wrapper carefully grown in Honduras, this blend is medium in body and complex. Hoyo de Tradicion draws a variety of pleasant nuances from its tri-country filler tobaccos, including aged long leaves from the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua. The resulting cigar is as pretty as it is flavorful. Like most cigars from the world renowned Villazon factory in Honduras, the Hoyo de Tradicion is a hearty and rich blend with earthy notes of nuts presented in a smooth, balanced fashion.

Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Legend Conqueror Rated 91 in Cigar Aficionado
A couple notches stronger than Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur, Excalibur Legend is a phenomenally unique cigar that is full-bodied, full-flavored, and fully enjoyable.

The name, Hoyo de Monterrey, is one of the most recognized names in the cigar industry. The brand originally developed in Cuba, but production was eventually moved to Honduras in 1969, where the cigars are still rolled at the Villazon Factory; well-known for its production of Punch and Sancho Panza. Even after the embargo, this brand is still associated with the best Cuban cigars on the market.

Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur Legend is incredibly complex due to its Nicaraguan and Dominican filler. The majority of the filler is ligero, which produces robust notes of earth with exaggerated hints of spice in the aftertaste. In addition, Legend also contains a unique tobacco grown on the volcanic island of Ometepe, also in Nicaragua. This tobacco creates a complexity unnoticed in other cigars, creating oak flavors, cedar, and a rich aftertaste, which lingers on the palate far after the cigar has extinguished. The wrapper concealing this incredible filler is a dark Connecticut Havana, which has some veins but burns evenly, allowing for a more robust flavor and a smooth character.
